Valdesil’s vineyard management has developed a scientific focus and includes viticultural practices that are innovative in north-west Spain.
Among the techniques that have been introduced is the seeding of cover crops in the rows to prevent soil erosion and to create competition between vines.
This focus has meant abandoning the usual practice of maintaining soils in a bare state in a relatively damp climate through ploughing or weedkiller use.
Valdesil vines are grown at a higher density of plants per hectare, adapting the rootstock to the vineyard’s soil-type.
Vineyard plantations at an altitude of over 550m are avoided, as the usual seasonal rains at the end of September hampers full ripening of the grapes above that height.
